Instant Pot Class Notes and Recipes from Super Saturday

NPR and QR-  Natural pressure release is usually for recipes that contain more liquid and that you want more tender. I always npr meat at least 10 minutes. * For some recipes, you should be able to leave the natural release for 10 minutes before you do a manual quick release if you don’t want to wait the full time for the natural release.                                        Quick release is when you manually switch the valve to depressurize and are more for foods that cook quickly, like veggies or pastas. Most recipes will tell you what to do. PC- pressure cooker PIP -Pot in pot. You can cook multiple items at a time. Sling- Make out of tin foil Equipment: Trivet, Sealing ring, Pot Liner Safety measures: Keep pc away from cabinets, don't place on stove, pouring liquids in pot instead of liner, overfilling, etc. Buttons to use: 90% of the time, you will be using Manual/Sautee/Off/Keep Warm plus the (+) (-) Adjust buttons. Water test- Plug in the Instant Pot.  Place the metal pot inside the outer pot.  Pour 2-3 cups of water into the inside pot.  Place the lid on the pot. Make sure the steam handle release knob is in the “Sealing” position on the lid.  Press ‘Steam’ on the control panel. Set the time to 2 minutes. You do this by pressing the + and – buttons until you get the right time. The Instant Pot now needs to reach pressure, which can take several minutes.  The display on the pot will say ‘On” until pressure is reached. There is not anything wrong with your pot at this point, it is just getting to pressure.  Just be aware it can take several minutes for it to reach pressure. This will be the case whenever you make a recipe with your pot, and you need to take this time required into account when preparing any meal in the pot – the pot has to reach pressure first before it will start cooking. Once it reaches pressure, the float valve that I discussed earlier will be in the up position.  You will also know it has reached pressure because the time remaining will show on the control panel. It will then start counting down the time. When you first use the pot, you may notice a kind of hot plastic smell. This is normal when you first start using the pot and will go away usually after the first use. Once the Instant Pot has completed its cooking cycle, it will beep, and the display will show L0:00.  It will now also go into a Keep Warm mode. To turn the pot off just hit the cancel button. Once it is off the display will read OFF. NPR or QR. Now you are all set! *Instant pot recipes count the cook time as the actual time your food is being cooked in the pot. But, it does take a few minutes for the instant pot to reach the temperature and pressure to start its cooking, so keep that in mind. If your recipe says 15 minutes in the instant pot, add another 10-20 minutes for the warm up and cool down.
